Pre-wedding photos New York City-Paris

For the curious minds, you can view a larger selection of the pre-wedding portrait session of Mirabelle and Andi that I photographed just recently.
We went for a stroll along the Seine, from the Place de la Concorde, across Tuilerie garden to the city bridges and square Henry V.
And a little note to inform everyone that I will be in New York City for the whole month of November. Feel free to get in touch for wedding info while i am back in town. I would be glad to organize your portrait or pre-wedding photo session in manhattan during this time as well.

Picasso thoughts and photography

award winning, best wedding photographer, Lifetime of experience, destination wedding photographer I often seem to get people I meet saying : " If only i had known about your photography when i got married ! My wedding photographer was such a disappointment.
What can I say ...
I just received this email actually ".... When we got married last July, our photographer had a family emergency and told us 3 days before our wedding that he was not able to be there. Therefore, we ended up with the only photographer available. Although our photographs are nice, they are not our style. We love art and fashion and for photographs we love journalistic/artistic style-like Olivier!!! ..." Sweet but unfortunately too late.
I often think of this story of Picasso. He was sitting outside one day and a woman passing by asked if he would do a quick sketch of her likeness. When he was done the lady asked how much she owed, and he said, “That will be $2000 please.” The lady said, “For 20 minutes of your time?” And he said, “No, for a lifetime of experience.”

Want to get married in France?

Posted by Olivier Lalin -

Getting Married in France.
If you've been doing your research as a foreign couple wanting to get married in France there are many governmental technicalities that arise, that most people just can't get around, either because of time, efforts or money involved.

The biggest is that at least one of the marrying partners has to be in France for at least 40 days (continuous) before the wedding.
So you cant just hop on a plane and get married the next day or even the next week. Making it impossible to simply elope to France. A marriage here takes planning in advance.

Then the second biggest issue is that in France you have to get married at the City Hall first, then you can have the normal tradition religious wedding ceremony elsewhere afterwards.

And then, you will need to have “ Publications of Banns” at the Town Hall (Mairie).

As the British Embassy, France notes “Most Mairies take approximately 4 –6 weeks to process an application. Requirements will vary for each Mairie, therefore, it is essential that you first meet with them in order to determine their exact documentary requirements and terms of validity (documents may need to be issued less than 3 months prior to date of marriage or publication of banns)”

By this point you might be thinking, “what a drag!” and “we can’t possibly do all of that”
What to Do to Make your Dream Wedding Come True.
Don’t be in despair there are still ways to still have your “wedding” cake and eat it too, in France!

What to Do
I suggest you get a civil marriage done in your home country, which basically eliminates all the obstacles listed above, which is comparatively a less tedious task in most countries. Then you can have the wedding ceremony here in France.

The Core !

Posted by Olivier Lalin

I read a post a few days ago from a well respected photographer from the west coast: Mike Colon. It was titled "tunnel vision" and he talked about perspective and priorities in one's life, in his own words.I really enjoyed reading it, probably because i could very well relate to what he had to say. Then, words from a Friend's wife came to my mind just now. They have beautiful twins and she talked about her daughters. She simply said "It is all happiness"- Well, all i can say about my career and my life is that it has only been happiness.I am very grateful. I feel blessed! I do - It hasn't been an all easy ride but i love my work. I am so glad I shoot weddings and am so much looking forward to photograph many more. For younger photographers, piece of advice may be : Love what you do first then share it with others. Take risk, forget everything you've learnt and try new things, experiment and most important learn from your mistakes... And let me tell you, wedding photography is great - Because i am a photographer and i am better with images then words...Just enjoy and be happy-

Destination weddings - Love it

Posted by Olivier Lalin -

I have just spoken to a Bride who is getting married in St Vincent in August 2007. She was inquiring about my availability and whether I wouldn’t mind traveling to the Caribbean for the wedding. As a matter of fact, most of my weddings are Destination weddings.

I do travel worldwide to photograph weddings in the most exquisite locations. This is such a Bliss. Not only did I managed to make a career out of a passion but I am getting paid to travel to destinations where I would probably never have been otherwise. Destination weddings takes a bit more organization with logistics, ect - But I love the “adventure” aspect of a destination wedding. I do need a budget for my assistant unless guests do not exceed 100. I usually spend three days with the wedding party that gives me lots of time to produce wonderful images. Then if I am lucky, I will stay an extra day. In St Vincent, I will probably end up staying another week and relax before the wedding season begins in NYC.

Listed below are a few of my favorite destination resorts and hotels.

First, get yourself a NICE guy and a talented Photographer

wedding, photography, bride, groom, bouquet,Vera Wang, central park, Olivier Lalin, Paris
Posted by Olivier Lalin - First and most important when you start looking for your wedding photographer, is to look for Mr nice Guy. Not only it might be a little extra to have a photographer with a sense of humor but AT THE END OF THE DAY, it will transcend in the images. There is a trend in "wedding terminoligies" today that flavors this style of wedding photography. I must say it doesn't sound right to my ear and it certainly doesn't sound like a lot of Fun either. The idea would be to simply document the wedding from a distance as it rolls in front of a photographers eyes without ever interrupting the flow! My task as a wedding photographer is to capture the moments, all the joy, the tears, the emotions, kisses, bouquets flying high for one thing but i have to move closer, get involved, meet the protagonists, and at times participate and Create moments with the help of the bride and groom, friends and family! In order to do that, you have to be accepted very quickly by everyone. In a way everyone has to love you at first sight, then you gain people's trust. Remember most of us are camera shy
Probably the reason why this wedding photojournalistic trend has attracted so many brides. Regardless, if you look at the image of this couple taken in central park, you might understand where i am getting at. The photo was made possible because i gained the couple's trust. It looks like a photojournalistic approach but it is not in a way as i guided them through a little game we played. And then i captured the moment.
