Nikon D3 for Wedding Photographer

Posted by Olivier Lalin -

I am a Nikon photographer. I moved to Digital three years ago. Have been using a couple of D2x which has been the High end Nikon digital tool for a year now! And I have just been told that Nikon is releasing a D3 with a full chip now competing with the Canon mark3 that just came out as well. I am kind of exiting at the news. Have been online reading the latest news from Nikon, ect ...

One little comment though: This new gadget cost $ 5,000
It is proven to efficiently work for 300 000 Clicks. Now considering that one can shoot at 11 frame second: Lets say that one might shoot continually at 11 frames second
Correct me if I am wrong but well that would make:

300000/11)=27272,727 seconds Life spam
or (27272/60)=454,545 minutes life spam
or (454.545/60)=7,57 hours !

Ouhhhaa That would make it my new very expensive Tool !! Thanks Nikon
"more info on the D3 here"

Here are a couple comments that you will find on weddinglight.com

"...You bring such a distinctive sensibility to your work and each of the different weddings we viewed seemed to reflect that vision--to be part of a beautiful, heightened Olivier Lalin world in which things are brighter, softer, mistier, shinier, richer, more expressive, and just generally lovelier than they normally are...as if God decided to tinker a little more with life on earth and improve the lighting and the hues! We are excited to see our wedding through your eyes..."
- Melanie Thernstrom
" I Have know Olivier Lalin 20 years, back from when we both [tried] to earn a living in London UK. All those years, he relinquished material rewards and comforts to preserve his photographer's integrity and earn the privilege to practice the craft. Today, Olivier is a true and unique professional artist- photojournalist. His images are eclectic, human, sensitive, sensual and technically [and intentionally] near-perfect. His images are about people, life and truly reflect our contemporary history. Spontaneity prevails and will only be compromised by the split second complex calculations necessary to capture and immortalize the moment. His images can either be savored light heartedly, or better, deserve to be studied in detail, like all true artwork!for connoisseurs only!"

THe Lotos Club was founded in 1870 as a literary club, and counted Mark Twain among its early members. He called it "The Ace of Clubs." The name was selected to convey "rest and harmony", coming as it did from Tennyson's poem, The Lotos Eaters. Over the years, the Club had several homes, finally coming to rest at 110 West 57th Street in 1909. When that location became too valuable to keep, due to real estate markets, the Club moved to its present home at 5 East 66th Street, just off Central Park, in 1947.

St Regis hotel - Some Truth about Photography and Bloody Mary

Posted by Olivier Lalin -

There is a truth in photographs that comes from seeing the world as it really is: sometimes messy, sometimes nearly formless in its “organicity,” often unexpected and always fleeting. These photos share a common characteristic, you could never take the same shot the next day. They emerge from “the river into which no man steps twice.” In that respect they come closer to life than many other photographs.

When we consider these photos in The Space Between, we think in the usual terms of movement, color and texture. However, we require more of the photos and of our viewers. Sometimes they are tempted to venture further into The Space Between where we believe their mind engages in extra effort. Integral to that engagement is a shared understanding that these photographs capture a real image at a specific moment in time, but that it has been removed from the contextual frame that makes its meaning and reality understood. In that sense such an image may then be seen as a metaphor for the greater study required in navigating global truths. Context may not be everything but truth can be independent of context.

At one level all of photography is about ordering the world into pattern and light, repetition and disjunction, compression and expansion. These are the rules we were all taught when first we picked up a camera: look for a different perspective, frame the shot, follow the rule of three… there are even rules for breaking the rules: use the lens flare, keep the center of interest out of focus, vary the depth of field, shoot for the blur. Everyone serious about photography has followed the rules, broken the rules, gone back to the rules, and tried to find new rules. That’s not what these special photos are about. They are not even about “a new way of seeing.” These photos are simply about finding a complexity in everyday scenes that might otherwise be overlooked.

Photos taken at The St. Regis Hotel,
This historical Beaux-Arts landmark has been serving the privileged since 1904, and thanks to a recent $100 million restoration, the Midtown gem continues to impress. Built by Col. John Jacob Astor IV of ill-fated Titanic fame, the St. Regis’s 315 guest rooms and suites feature Louis XVI furniture, crystal chandeliers, soaring ceilings, marble baths and silk-covered walls. Need more? For a whopping $12,500 or more a night, the Presidential Suite comes with a dining room for eight, fully-equipped kitchen, library, three bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms. Each floor has 24-hour butler service to tend to a guest’s every whim—including, even to unpack the suitcases. The legendary King Cole Bar and Lounge is home to Maxfield Parrish's famed 1895 mural of Old King Cole, and claims to be the birthplace of the Bloody Mary. Every inch of the property screams opulence—down to the mini chandeliers in each of the stalls on the first floor men's room.

Wedding Photo-journalist Association of America

Posted by Olivier Lalin -

I am a member of the Wedding Photo-journalist Association of America ! I have seen it Grow to become a worldwide organization. I mention it because i read those few lines this morning taken from the WPJA site.

"... The traditional photographer is more apt to mingle with the crowd, talk to people, and interact. It's his or her personality,” he charges. “The documentary photographer is more of an observer, watching people react and interact.”
It’s that observing eye that captures the reality of a wedding — the real moments that you’ll remember years later when flipping through your photos. Does he think that’s a trend? “I believe there is beauty and art in reality,” he says simply..."
WPJA.jpg

Only, i tend to feel that a Good wedding photographer doesn't fall into little boxes that trends, Wedding magazines such as Bride's and the photographer themselves seem to believe in - I would just say that a great wedding photographer is a multi task, talented professional at ease with a crowd, moving in and standing back at appropriate moment as situations require.
There is something else out there - rather then a condensed / cliche version of " The traditional photographer " versus " The documentary photographer " when it comes to wedding photography - I ll just call him " The GREAT wedding photographer "
for now !! I do know a few ...

OUR Wedding Pictures and other moments

Posted by Olivier Lalin -
Here are a few picts of our OWN wedding !!
For the story, Yan and I were supposed to get Married in Paris. The French embassy in Kingston, Jamaica decided otherwise, refusing the visa to my beautiful wife to be !! I decided to Fly to Jamaica and marry yanique on Long bay beach. Everything was completely unplanned, almost unpredictable- It was Yanique and I - The Ocean and a local Minister ( Rev. Farr + 876 381 3167 ) - We met up with a photographer there and decided we would take the pictures of our own wedding - ( Well I DID really !! ) I had a point and shoot camera, small tripod, we used time exposure and Tri-X film !! Crazy I know - We had a beautiful light, it was early morning and the sun was just piercing the Clouds ! Union made in Heaven indeed -

Here is the definition of Heaven : Heaven is a plane of existence (sometimes held to exist in our own universe) in religions and spiritual philosophies, typically described as the holiest possible place, accessible by people according to various standards of divinity (goodness, piety, etc.) Christians generally hold that it is the afterlife destination of those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their saviour. In unusual instances, humans have claimed, according to many testimonies and traditions, personal knowledge of Heaven. They then presume this is for the purpose of teaching the rest of humanity about life, deities and notions of the afterlife.
Beautiful, NON!

Meanwhile, I would have loved My Friend Thierry to be there and take a few rolls but that wasn't possible. He promised to do a portrait / GLAM session of Yan and I in Paris though. Very much looking forward to that !! - Meanwhile, here are a few photos of our wedding-
with LOVE,
Yanique and Olivier
